INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Football team rounded out their 2025 season falling to cross county rival Coffeyville 28-20 on Saturday night.
In the final game of the season, the Pirates were looking for an emphatic finish to their season, an upset of 7th-ranked and bitter rival Coffeyville on their home field. The Pirates looked like they were going to give the upset bid a real run as they jumped out to an early 10-0 lead thanks to an 11 yard strike from tight end converted quarterback for the night James Resar to his fellow tight end Phillip DeFelice.
The Red Ravens were immediately able to shake the slow start, as they were able to put together a ten play, 75 yard drive for their first score of the evening, cutting the lead to 10-7.
After a three and out from the Pirate offense, the Red Ravens continued their bounce back as quarterback Mac Armstrong threw his second touchdown pass to retain the lead for the visitors.
Just when it looked like the Pirates were putting a good drive together to regain the lead, a penalty backed them up, and it was followed by an interception that was returned for a touchdown, making it 21 unanswered points and an 11 point lead for the Red Ravens. That 11 point lead would hold through halftime and until the midway point of the 3rd quarter, when Armstrong threw his third touchdown of the day pushing the Coffeyville lead to 18.
The Pirates were able to answer on their next drive, cutting it back to a two possession game with a 30 yard field goal from Colton Brunke-Brown.
The Pirate defense would hold up for the remainder of the game as they kept Coffeyville off of the scoreboard aided by a mass of penalties.
Still down by two scores, the Pirates went down swinging as Nathan Neal entered the game at quarterback and orchestrated a fantastic 8 play, 80 yard drive that was capped off by a three yard touchdown run by Jimarion Guyton. The score cut the Red Raven lead to 28-20 and gave the Pirates an opportunity for an onside kick to hopefully get the ball back. The onside kick ultimately was unsuccessful, clinching the victory for Coffeyville.
James Resar ended his junior college quarterbacking debut 19-31for 141 yards and one touchdown. The Pirates did have some success on the ground as Ivan Johnson had 14 carries for 46 yards, while Ejani Shakir ended his Pirate career with 9 catches for 112 yards.
With the loss, the Pirates finished their 2025 season with a record of 4-7 overall and 2-4 in KJCCC play.
