INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - After a successful season where the Pirates finished 15-16, earning them the seventh seed in the KJCCC and a home playoff game, a trio of Pirate standouts were honored for their efforts being named to the KJCCC All-Conference Team.
Sterling Knox and David Wilson were both named to the KJCCC First Team, while Trae Lewis was also recognized as an Honorable Mention.
David Wilson, a 6’7 wing from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma left his mark in his sophomore season with the Pirates as he was the team's leading scorer, averaging 18.6 points per game. WIlson finished in double figures in every game but three, that included 13 games of 20+ points and a pair of 35+ point performances. His two high scoring performances nearly bookended his season, as he dropped 38 points in an overtime loss to Northern Oklahoma - Enid back on November 10th, and then nearly matched his season high with 37 points in the final regular season game of the year against Cloud County.
Wilson was also a force on the defensive end, as he finished with 65 steals, good for second in the league, including four games of 5+ steals.
Wilson always had a knack for the highlight play, accounting for multiple high-flying dunks across a stellar sophomore season.
Creighton University Transfer, Sterling Knox left a lasting impact in his one season in the Jayhawk conference that unfortunately was cut short due to injury. When healthy, Sterling impacted all facets of the game, averaging 15.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. His 5.7 assists per game was tops in the league as he finished with seven games of 8+ assists and two games with 10 assists.
The 6’6 point guard had multiple big moments throughout the year, including last second game winning buckets against both Pratt and Hutchinson, while his best game came in a win over Fort Hays Tech Northwest where he finished with 34 points on 11 of 14 shooting.
The lone Pirate freshman to be named to the All-Conference team was 6’0 Guard Trae Lewis, who was recognized as an Honorable Mention for his efforts.
The sharpshooting Lewis, finished the year averaging 12.9 points per game and shot it from deep at 33%.
The Spring, Texas native finished in double figures in 19 of the 28 games he played in this year, including a pair of 30 point performances in conference play as he poured in a season high 31 points in the conference opener at Colby, and nearly matched his season high with 30 in a one point loss to Barton on February 21st.
Lewis has already been named to the JA48 team, a summer showcase for the Nations top JUCO freshman and is poised for a big sophomore season for the Pirates.
“I’m extremely proud of David, Sterling and Trae for their efforts this year and in getting recognized by the conference for their accomplishments,” said ICC Head Coach Jai Steadman. “They represent Pirate Basketball to the highest regard, and will continue to do so as they progress in their basketball careers”
