Indy Softball splits a pair of games with Cottey

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Softball team got back in the win column, as they split a Monday doubleheader with Cottey College JV, winning game one 10-2 in five innings, before falling 6-1 in game two.

In game one, Athena Broaddus was stellar in the circle, after a little bit of a rocky first inning, she settled in nicely holding Cottey off the scoreboard for the remainder of her five innings of work.

Offensively, the Pirates bats came to life in the second inning, as they exploded for seven runs to give Broaddus a nice lead to work with. In the bottom of the fifth innings, the bats came to life again, as a Londyn Dempster two-rbi single capped off a three run inning, and capped off the 10-2 run rule victory for Indy.

Dempster led the way with three hits and her two RBI, while Madyson Paxton and Rebeka LaMarch each finished with multiple hits and multiple RBI. Taylor Nixon, Kylie Porschien, and Jordyn Hook each had multi-hit games in the victory.

In game two, Cottey once again struck first as they plated four runs in the first frame, but the Indy offense was unable to ever get themselves back into the game this time around. Trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning, the Pirates were able to get on the board on a RBI single from Madyson Paxton, but that was all the Pirates would muster in a 6-1 defeat.

In the circle, Brooklin Phillips took the loss, while Londyn Dempster was very effective in relief, striking out nine over 6.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Isabelle Choat led the way with a pair of hits.

The Pirates will be right back in action this week as they host NOC-Tonkawa, NEO and Marshalltown on Thursday, Friday and Sunday respectively.
