IOLA, Kan. - The Pirates suffered another pair of tough road losses on Saturday as they fell in game one 5-4 before falling short in game two, losing 8-5 against the Allen Red Devils.
In game one, the Pirates once again clawed back after being down early, as they scored two runs in the fourth, and single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game up at four. After failing to take the lead in the top half of the seventh inning, Allen seized their opportunity as the first two batters reached base, leading to the Pirates second consecutive walk-off loss in a row as Allen plated the game winning run to take game one 5-4.
Offensively, Madyson Paxton led the way with three hits, while Kamdyn Minnick delivered two hits and a team high three RBI.
In the circle, Brooklin Phillips was solid, as she kept the Pirates in the game, but ultimately took the loss as she was relieved in the seventh inning after allowing the leadoff base runner. She finished the day going six innings, surrendering five earned runs while only walking three.
In game two, the Pirates once again were playing from behind right away as the Red Devils exploded for seven first run innings. The Pirates continued to chip away and claw back with a pair of runs in both the second and third innings, but were unable to climb all the way out of the hole they had dug. They were able to scratch across one more run in the top of the seventh but Allen was able to stymie the Pirate rally and complete the two game sweep.
Kylie Dennison paced the Pirate bats as she was a perfect four for four at the plate, while Alexis Yarnell had a multi-hit game and pitched in an RBI.
In the circle, London Dempster was able to settle the game down after the tough start, ultimately going five strong innings, surrendering just one unearned run.
The Pirates are now 1-7 in KJCCC play with two crucial doubleheaders coming next week, beginning Thursday, as they travel across Montgomery County to square off with Coffeyville.
