COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - The Independence Softball team once again suffered another heartbreaking loss as they dropped both games of Monday's rescheduled doubleheader against rival Coffeyville, 9-6 in game one, and 7-6 in eight innings in game two.
In game one, both teams came out of the gate swinging the bats, but a five spot in the bottom of the third allowed Coffeyville to jump out to a comfortable lead at 9-3. The Pirates began to chip away in the fourth inning as they plated two runs to cut the deficit down to four.
Pirate reliever Brooklin Phillips did a fantastic job keeping the Red Ravens off of the scoreboard, but the Pirate offense started to have the same struggles as they were only able to scratch one more run across in a last inning rally attempt to eventually fall 9-6.
Phillips finished her relief appearance going 3.2 innings while only surrendering three hits and striking out three.
Offensively, Madyson Paxton led the way with three hits, while Londyn Dempster and Na'BraiJhanae Phillips each drove in a pair of runs.
In game two, the Pirate offense didn't show up until the later innings, as a three run fifth inning got Indy right back in it, tying the game at four. Pirate starter Athena Broaddus fought out of some trouble in multiple innings, doing all she could to keep the game tied across the late innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Pirates took their first lead of the day as Kylie Dennison ripped a two run home run to right field to put the Pirates up 6-4 and just three outs away from a win.
Ultimately, Coffeyville was able to answer when they needed it most, as they scratched across a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and send the game to extra innings. After a scoreless top half for the Pirates, the Red Ravens got their first two batters aboard and a bloop single to right field was able to plate the winning run, clinching the doubleheader sweep for Coffeyville.
Dennison finished with a pair of hits including her late inning home run, while Paxton and Phillips each continued their nice day with a multi-hit game as well. Londyn Dempster and Kylie Porschien each drove in a run in the loss.
The Pirates now fall to 1-9 in KJCCC play and have put themselves in a few must win situations down the stretch of the season. They will have their first chance to get back in the win column Wednesday, when they host Cloud County for a 1:00 pm double header.
