Pirates rally back but fall in heartbreaking fashion as they drop a pair at Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - A slow start for the Pirates ultimately led to a a pair of losses against Cowley on Thursday afternoon, as a valiant comeback effort to salvage a split fell short as the Pirates followed up a 14-1 game one loss, with a 10-9 heartbreaking loss in game two.

In game one, the Pirates were knocked back almost right away, as the offense could only muster one hit, while the Tigers used a six run second inning and a five run third inning to blow the game open.

Rebekah LaMarch got the Pirates only hit in the game, while Kamdyn Minnick reached base twice and scored the lone run on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Maddison Wammock.

In game two, the Pirates bounced back and showed a lot of fight as they clawed back from a late four run deficit to tie the game. The Pirates were able to score early but were still playing from behind in the top of the sixth when they trailed 9-5 before Na'BraiJhanae Phillips promptly unloaded the bases with a grand slam to tie the game at nine. In the bottom half of the sixth the Pirates were able to hold Cowley off the scoreboard for the first time in the game, keeping the game knotted at nine. In the top half of the final frame, Indy looked like they were going to take the lead on a deep drive to center field, but Cowley centerfielder Breanna Curry made a highlight play, robbing the Pirates of the home run, and the late lead.

With the momentum swung in the Tigers favor now, Carsen Carpenter was able to end the game with one swing as her walk-off home run lead to a second loss on the day for the Pirates.

Offensively the Pirate bats came alive in game two as Madyson Paxton, London Dempster, and Madison Wammock each had three hit days, while Phillips had a game high four RBI all on her big swing in the sixth inning.

Dempster was able to hold it down in the circle as she threw 3.2 innings in relief, but ultimately suffered the loss, surrendering three runs, including the walk off home run.

The Pirates now move to 7-23-1 overall and just 1-5 in conference play, as they look to get back to .500 on Saturday as they travel to take on Allen.
