Pirates pick up win in final match of Seminole State Tri

SEMINOLE, Okla.  - The Independence Volleyball team was able to put an end to their losing streak as they split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the Seminole State Tri-Match. 

In the first match of the day, the Pirates took on the hosting Trojans of Seminole State. Indy got off to a great start, claiming the first set in thrilling fashion, 27-25, before dropping the next two sets 15-25 and 20-25. With their backs against the wall, the Pirates bounced back and won the fourth set 25-18 before eventually falling in the fifth and final set 9-15. The Pirates' struggles in five set matches continued as they now move to 1-6 in such matches on the season. 

Alyssa Trane led the way with 12 kills, while Sophia Reyes had 11 digs and four service aces. Freshman Riley Griffin dished out 17 assists and had 12 digs of her own in the loss. 

The Pirates bounced back in a big way to finish the day as they knocked off Dallas College - Mountain View in straight sets. After another thrilling first set that saw the Pirates pull out the 29-27 victory, they went on to claim the next two sets 25-20 and 25-21 to snap their eight game sling streak. 

Trane once again paced the Pirates offensively with 14 kills, while Reyes and Griffin each had another nice game with 12 and 11 digs respectively. 

The 1-1 day moves the Pirates overall record to 8-20 on the year, as they now gear up for a pair of home matches next week. Tuesday they will take on conference foe and nationally ranked Johnson County before preparing for a rematch with Seminole State on Thursday.
