DALLAS, Texas - The Independence Volleyball team was able to pick up another win this week as part of a two match split, day one at the Dallas-Richland tournament.
The Pirates won a five set thriller in their first match, reverse sweeping Southwestern Christian College, losing the first two sets, but rallying to win the final three. They lost sets one and two, 24-26 and 22-25, before turning the tide and taking the final three sets 25-19, 25-22 and 15-11.
Alyssa Trane and Ryleigh Zitek led the way offensively with 15 kills and eight kills for the Pirates, while Sophia Reyes showed her veteran presence by digging out 25 balls and serving five aces. The two Pirate setters Kimberly Owens and Riley Griffen each had 15 assists apiece in the win.
The Pirates short two game win streak would come to a halt in their second match of the day, as they lost in straight sets to Dallas - Eastfield 23-25, 14-25, and 15-25. Trane and Zitek kept up their offensive attack as Trane had another 10 kills and Zitek had seven. Kimberly Owens dished out another 17 assists, while Reyes had another 13 digs defensively.
The Pirates will be back in action bright and early tomorrow morning, as they look to finish the week on a high note when they take on Temple College at 8:00 AM, and the host school, Dallas - Richland after the conclusion of their first game, currently scheduled for 9:30 AM.
