Pirates end weekend on high note with win in final match

INDEPENDENCE, Kan.  - The Independence Volleyball team ended the weekend on a positive note at their own tournament as they knocked off Ottawa JV for the second time this season after dropping their first match to Clarendon on Saturday. 

After a quick turnaround from last night to early this morning, the Pirates hung tough with a good Clarendon team, falling 18-25, 19-25, 17-25. Clarendon ended up losing only one set the whole weekend. 

Local Kansas freshman Ryleigh Zitek led the way with nine kills, while Sophia Reyes once again held it down for Indy defensively with 16 digs and threw in two service aces. Kimbery Owens had 12 assists in the loss. 

In the nightcap, the Pirates managed to finish the weekend victorious as they took down Ottawa JV in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16. Reyes paced the Pirates with 17 digs, while Alyssa Trane added to her team high in kills with nine. Keeley Brown had four service aces, which included a run of three in a row that helped spark a run in the third set. 

The win moves Indy’s overall record to 7-12, as they will dive back into conference play this upcoming Wednesday as they host Allen County at 6:30 pm.
