Strong second quarter not enough for Lady Pirates at Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Independence Women’s Basketball team showcased a very promising second quarter but failed to string it together for a full game as they fell on the Road to Cowley 81-46 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Pirates got off to a slow start in the first quarter, as 12 turnovers were able to propel Cowley out in front by 14 after the first frame. Indy quickly bounced back from the slow start as they put together one of their more complete quarters of the season in the second frame, winning the quarter 16-10 and trimming the Tigers lead down to eight heading to the halftime break.

The second half resembled more of the first quarter than the second for the Lady Pirates, as the defensive pressure from Cowley continued to wreak havoc, as Indy turned the ball over 11 more times and were only able to put in nine of 39 field goal attempts including 0-8 from three.

The Lady Pirates finished the game shooting 28% from the field, 7% from three, and 56% from the line, while the Tigers were 47% from the field and 32% from deep. The Lady Pirates did have a slight advantage on the glass as they outrebounded the Pirates 40-34, but 28 Indy turnovers led to 25 points for the Tigers which helped them stretch the lead for the majority of the second half.

Rylan Chandler led the way with 11 points off of the bench and pulled down five rebounds, while Danaiya Stillwell-Smith continued her solid freshman season by finishing in double figures with 10 and added in six boards. Ra’Niyah Tillman provided a spark off of the bench as she pitched in five points and had a team high eight rebounds.

The loss moves the Pirates to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in KJCCC play as they will be back on their home court for their next game when they host one of the nation's elite, in Dodge City, who will be coming off of their first loss of the season. Tip-off set for 5:30 pm on Wednesday night.
