INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Women’s Basketball team never held a lead Monday night, as a poor shooting day led to a 70-33 loss to cross-county rival Coffeyville.
The Red Ravens used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to immediately jump out to a double digit lead, and never looked back the rest of the night. Coffeyville followed that up with an 11-2 run that spanned almost the whole duration of the second quarter, but Jade Oliney hit a jumper at the buzzer, giving the Lady Pirates their second bucket of the quarter.
The second half was much of the same, as Indy could never catch the hot hand, finishing the night shooting 23% from the field and 15% from deep.
Three of their four 3-point makes came in the fourth quarter when freshman Phillipa Ferguson got the crowd going with a trio of deep balls down the stretch.
On the flip side, the Red Ravens shot 52% from the field, dominating the paint as they scored 40 of their 70 points from in close. The Red Ravens also had advantages in the rebound and turnover battle, outrebounding the Pirates 46-34, and converting 20 Indy turnovers into 18 points.
The Lady Pirates, now 4-17 overall and 1-14 in the KJCCC, will hit the road for the rest of the week, as they travel to take on nationally ranked Hutchinson on Wednesday.
