INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Women's Basketball team dropped their first game back from the Holiday Break Saturday afternoon, 76-37 to Seward County.
It was a struggle most of the day for the Pirates to find any offense, as their best offensive quarter came in the first frame where they scored 13 points and only trailed by five. The Pirates were only able to score 24 points the rest of the night, en route to a 19% shooting night from the field. Meanwhile, the Saints shot 38% from the field, including a 44% clip from three to help distance themselves over the stretch of the final three quarters.
The Pirates trailed by just 11 at the break, but the Saints got rolling in the second half, outsourcing the Pirates 42-14 en route to the 39 point win.
The Saints won the rebounding battle 54-41 and also were able to turn 22 Pirate turnovers into 22 points, while Indy was only able to turn 18 Saint turnovers into 10 points.
The Pirates were led by Danaiya Stillwell-Smith who had nine points and 13 rebounds, while Cinahya Ekwuruke pitched in eight points and seven rebounds off of the bench. Nyah Chandler also had eight points and a pair of steals in the loss.
The Pirates will be right back in action on their home floor Wednesday as they host Barton.
