COLBY, Kan. - The Independence Women’s Basketball team struggled to ever get any offense going as they dropped their conference opener on the road at Colby Wednesday night, 57-24.
Indy had their worst shooting performance of the young season as they only made nine field goals all evening which led to 20% from the field and 18% from three at 2 for 11. The Pirates also missed a handful of opportunities from the free throw line as they went 4-13, for 30%.
The Pirates battled for the duration of the first quarter, despite only scoring five points, they only surrendered eight to trail by three after the first 10 minutes. Colby was able to break it open in the second quarter as they won the quarter 20-6 to take a commanding lead into the half, one they would not relinquish.
The Pirates had the same amount of turnovers as points, 24, which was a major contributor in the loss.
Danaiya Stillwell-Smith had a team high nine points and four rebounds.
The Pirates will look to bounce back this weekend, as they travel to take on cross-county rival and 24th-ranked Coffeyville on Saturday.
