DODGE CITY, Kan. - The Independence Women’s Basketball team suffered their seventh straight loss at the hands of seventh-ranked Dodge City Saturday afternoon, 88-52.
Independence was playing from behind all afternoon long as Dodge City immediately scored the first 11 points of the game en route to back to back 24-9 quarters, and a 48-18 halftime lead for the Conquistadors.
The Lady Pirates were able to find more success on the offensive end in the second half, shooting 39% from the field and pouring in five three pointers on their way to 34 second half points.
The #7th-ranked Conquistadors never let their foot off the gas, as they finished with 23 assists on 35 made field goals, highlighting their great ball movement on the offensive end. Dodge City outrebounded the Lady Pirates 53-32, and turned 18 Indy turnovers into 21 points.
Independence was led by yet another double-double from Danaiya Stillwell-Smith, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Mimi White was the only other Lady Pirate to finish in double figures as she pitched in 12 points off of the bench. Nyah Chandler added five points, five rebounds, and a team high two steals in the loss.
Independence now gears up for the final regular season contest on Wednesday when they host Cloud County. The Lady Pirates need a win to help secure a spot in the KJCCC tournament, although they remain tied for that 12th and final spot with Fort Hays Tech Northwest for the time being. Tip-off for Wednesday’s game is set for 5:30 and it is Sophomore Night.
