INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Volleyball team picked up their first conference win of the season in thrilling fashion as they knocked off Fort Scott in five sets in their final home match of the year.
On a night where Independence honored their five sophomores playing their final game in front of the Pirate faithful, Indy was able to send off those five with one last win in the blue and gold.
Fort Scott, who entered the game with a record of 4-21, claimed the first set, pulling away late for the 25-19 win.
The first set victory by the Greyhounds would go on to be the largest margin of victory of any of the five sets as the two teams played a very competitive back and forth final four sets. The Pirates were able to bounce back and claim both the next two sets to flip the lead, 29-27 and 25-23.
With the Pirates looking for a third straight set victory, Fort Scott battled back, winning another close set, 23-25 to send the game to a decisive fifth set.
The Pirates came out firing in the final set and quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead, and would maintain the five point advantage, eventually winning the set and the match 15-10.
The win not only sends the Pirate sophomore off with a win, but gives Indy their first KJCCC win of the season and their 11th overall.
A pair of freshmen hitters led the way for Indy as Alyssa Trane and Hailee Townsend had 13 and 11 kills respectively. Sophomores Sophia Reyes and Kimmy Owens had great showings in their final home match as Reyes tallied 20 digs, while Owens pitched in 11 digs of her own while adding 25 assists.
The Pirates now gear up for one final regular season game, next Wednesday, as they travel to take on Neosho.
