Pirates roll to win in home opener

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - There is no place like home for the Independence Volleyball team as they knocked off Rose State College in four sets to win their first home match of the 2025 season.

Indy came into tonight after dropping their final three matches over the weekend, but immediatley righted the ship. The two teams split the first two sets, in a very close, evenely matched affair, with neither team ever pulling ahead by more than four points at any point. Indy was able to claim the first set 25-22, before dropping the second set 24-26 after a late push.

The Pirates jumped out to early leads in both of the final two sets and cruised to victory with 25-16 and 25-13 wins respectively.

Multiple Pirates contributed to the big win. Alyssa Trane continued her hot start to the season as she had another 15 kills and pitched in three blocks. Tasiya Combs-Pierce pitched in a team high four blocks, while the two Pirate setters, Serrena Hernandez and Kimberly Owens each had double digit assists with 16 and 12 respectively. Sophia Reyes was all over the court as she added to her team high in digs with another 15, and Ary Rodriguez did a little bit of everything with four service aces and eight digs of her own.

The win marks the second of the year for Indy, who now gears up for another four match weekend as they will head to the Dallas - Richland tournament. They will take on Southwestern Christian and Dallas - Eastfield on Friday before sqauring off with Temple College and Dallas - Richland on Saturday.
