MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - The Independence Volleyball team picked up their 10th win of the season Saturday afternoon, as they knocked off Rose State College in a back and forth, five set match.
This was the second meeting between the two schools this season. Back on August 27th, in the Pirates home opener, they knocked off the Raiders in four sets. Fast forward to today, and the two teams, very evenly matched once again, traded off set victories the duration of the match.
Indy got off on the right foot winning the crucial first set 25-16. The Raiders immediately answered, taking a close second set 22-25.
Sets three and four, were two different tales for the Pirates, as they managed to win the decisive third set, 25-23. Now leading two sets to one, the Pirates may have taken their foot of the gas a little bit, as they dropped the fourth set 9-25, by far the biggest gap in margin of any set.
Indy quickly shook off any fourth set struggles and were able to lock back in for a 15-11 victory in set five, sealing their second victory over the Raiders on the year.
Alyssa Trane had a big day, adding to her team high in kills with 19, but also pitched in 27 digs on the defensive side. Sophia Reyes once again paced the Pirates with 30 digs, while Hailee Townsend pitched in 10 kills. Kimberly Owens dished out 19 assists and had 16 digs of her own in the victory.
The Pirates continue their tail end of their season next week as they host KJCCC foe Fort Scott on Wednesday. This is the final home game for the Pirates, and will be Sophomore Day, where we will honor the five Pirate sophomores.
